This "One of a kind" wood
sculpture depicts a Sea Otter "flying".
On the surface it
sounds kind of crazy but the carved
commission brought the "Flying Otter Winery" logo to life.
The Winery approached me to do a sculpture for their business.
After submitting sketches and drawings the final piece was
decided: suspending the piece from the ceiling in a three
dimensional position.
Of course, the hard part was bringing a
sketch into a full sculpture.
Hand carved in Alder wood, the
wings went into the body about 1 1/2" on each side giving the
piece movement.
A hand rubbed Tung Oil finish imparted a
beautiful low luster look.
Screw eyes attached at the top
front and rear enables the customer to hang the piece at
different angles depending on string length to each of the screw
eyes.
A torch darkened the flippers on the sculpture for
contrast.
Measuring approximately 25" wide by 20" high, the
carvings depth ended up at 18"
Quite an unusual piece, the
process was fun and challenging.
It now displays in Pinckney,
Michigan at the winery.
